It took eight years for doctors to correctly diagnose my Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Making matters worse, my health insurer wouldn’t allow me to take the medication my doctor prescribed for me, instead forcing me to try and fail on cheaper medications, a policy known as step-therapy, before I was approved for the medication my doctor thought would help me. It took close to a year of forced step therapy before consideration of preferred treatment was granted by my insurer. For an entire year, I experienced allergic reactions of escalating intensity and unpleasant side effects from long-term steroid use before I was finally approved for the medication that completely changed my life.
