Before I was diagnosed with lung cancer, health insurance was not something I ever worried about.
This all changed in 2015 when I learned I had lung cancer. Upon my diagnosis, I had one mission: to fight this cancer with everything I had. Little did I know, not only would I be waging a war on cancer, I would be battling my insurance company in order to save my own life.
In some cases, insurers are blatantly ignoring physicians’ treatment recommendations, effectively denying patients lifesaving options. Going through a crisis like cancer has been eye opening. On top of coming face–to-face with mortality, many cancer patients like me also confront what might be the biggest financial crisis of our lives.
